Music Monday – The City Harmonic

Today’s Music Monday focus is on a new band called The City Harmonic. This video is a great introduction to the band – a song that explains what the band is all about. It makes you want to join in and sing along doesn’t it?

Their six-song EP Introducing The City Harmonic came out in November and already the band is turning quite a few heads online. The above video already has more than 20,000 views.

Wear your Summer Camp T-shirt Day

Wednesday, Dec. 8, is National Wear Your Summer Camp T-shirt Day, which means it’s a great time to start cleaning out your drawers to find your favorite camp T-shirt so that you can join with hundreds of other people around the country showing their summer camp pride on Wednesday.

I’m particularly excited about this event because our next Blog Madness event in March is going to be a battle of the camp T-shirts.

Planning on participating? E-mail a photo of you in your favorite camp shirt for Summer Camp T-shirt Day to delancocamp.lakeagape@picasaweb.com.

Summer Camp Culture – Salute Your Shorts

Sing it with me now, “Camp Anawanna, we hold you in our heart….”

Salute Your Shorts was a ’90s Nickelodeon show set at the fictional Camp Anawanna. I can’t remember if I watched the show when it was originally aired or when it was in re-runs but either way it was on Nickelodeon while I was a camper at Delanco Camp and always did an excellent job of keeping me in the camp spirit throughout the school year.

The show, which lasted only two seasons, was based on the 1986 book of the same name. It focused on a group of teenage campers, their annoying counselor and the various issues that arise during their time at Anawanna. Among the show’s characters was one of the more unforgettable nicknames in the history of television – Donkeylips.

The show’s name comes from a popular prank where boy campers steal a pair of boxer shorts from another camper and run them up the flag pole, replacing the American flag for the morning flag salute. I’ve not heard tell of this particular prank happening at camp, but there was something other than a flag flying on our flag pole at one point during Teen 2 this summer.

Have you seen the show? What do you remember most about it?

Bible Time: Pray

Bible time! Read 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

In John 15:14 Jesus says “..you are my friends.” (NLT) Think about your friends for a moment. When was the last time you talked to your bff? Before you opened this right? You texted them, or called them. I can’t go a day without talking to my best friends! So why is it that we can go weeks without talking to God?

How can we forget to talk to our friends? That just doesn’t happen. Jesus doesn’t forget you. I’m not trying to make anyone feel guilty but let’s face reality, prayer doesn’t always come before texting. Proverbs 15:8 says “… He delights in the prayers of the upright.” (NLT) Jesus likes to hear from us!

Prayer is doing business with God. Matthew 6:6 says “…When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”(NIV)

Just like you vent to your friends, vent to God. There’s a difference here… Your friends can’t always help you with your problems, they can give you advice and be a shoulder to cry on, but Jesus can do so much more. John 14:13-14 says “I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” (NIV) Although it tells us in Matthew 6:8 “your Father knows exactly what you need before you ask him!” (NLT) He still wants to hear it from you! “…ask me…”And doesn’t it feel good to get things off your chest?

It is important to remember that prayer isn’t all about “can You?” and “will You?” it’s also about “thank You!” and “praise You!.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us “Give thanks in all circumstances…” (NIV)

Which brings us to our song today. Continue reading

Fall Retreat: 32 things and counting

So I went to Delanco Camp this weekend and as usual it was perfection wrapped in a pretzal roll…or what not. I woke up in the morning, walked outside with my sweats, then said hi to all the lovely people in the kitchen and whoever would walk by. I poured a cup of joe, put a crazy amount of sugar in it (might explain my goofiness) then walked out to the flag-less pole and a whole bunch of us just sang worship songs. It was amazing! So here are just a few things from the weekend that totally just blew my mind.

1. Being told I couldn’t be anymore beautiful by a coworker/roomate/friend/phellow phillies phan.
2. Scott and Meg Rambo visiting with Tim, who is so adorable (if that even explains it) and their new baby Benjamin!
3. Countless hugs.
4. Learning new things about people, meaning the deep things of their heart, like what fruit they like to eat hahaha.
5. Baked Ziti made by a fabulous volunteer kitchen staff.
6. Campers doing an incredible job sweeping the Tabernacle and their dorms!
7. Campers raising their hands in worship to “God With us” by Tenth Avenue North.
8. Hearing that the Phillies came back by countless people, and seeing the excitement in the campers who were Phillies fans!
9. Letting a two year old help me ring the bell for service ;)!
10. Taking photos with people I love on the last day!
11. Late night kitchen raid and conversation that could go any which way.
12. Being told I was loved just because I brought a power strip to someone who originally asked for an extension cord…was not thinking at that moment I guess.
13. A few friends that I know of raising their hand in worship while they were consoling someone. Perfect imagry of Jesus feeling people’s pain and worshipping his father at the same time!
14. Hot coffee with a lot of sugar.
15. Teaching someone a path to the Chapel in the pines!
16. Jesus’s boat stores, and being reminded that Peter also walked on water by faith, he was only human! Look what we can do with enough faith.
17. Secret missions…I can’t tell you…it’s a secret.
18. Trash run with the Drid in the truck with the loudest engine ever!
19. A million people there that had my name…got confusing sometimes!
20. Campers who wanted to chat with me about stuff, and just doing stuff for them was fun!
21. Playing guitar and watching people play guitar.
22. Early morning worship, “I got a river of life flowing out of me!”
23. Smiley fries!
24. Testimonies around a fire.
25. The new song “Our God” by Chris Tomlin.
26. Being asked “Em Taylor, why have you not hugged me in the last hour?”
27. Eating with different people for every meal.
28. Fudge bar!
29. Seeing people at camp that I didn’t think were going to be there.
30. Just becoming a better person every minute there!
31. Wearing sweats practically the whole time.
32. Reenacting Titanic (not the sad parts) “I’m flying Jack! I’m flying!”
…might be more to come!
